Ivana K. Bilic / Rainbow factory / for two marimbas, sounds and voices

€28.00Price

The composition is scored for two marimbas, with sounds and voices produced by the two musicians and performed with a tape featuring the sound of a train recorded live, in motion, specifically the engine. However, unlike tapes generated by computer programs, this engine is imperfect in its rhythm. Through this aspect, it almost takes on the characteristic of a living being and acts as the third musician alongside the marimba duo. Other ambiental sounds on the tape such as rain, train horn, passage over other rails add to the percussive quality of this unlikely musical partner.

In addition to the prepared marimba, plastic bottles instead of mallets, and glasses filled with water, the musicians also use elements of speech and stage movement in their arsenal. Upon entering the stage, they open the door to an imaginary workshop where, with rattling and stomping, they set in motion their whimsical machinery for producing dreams of all colors.

Formally, the composition follows the rhythm of the train in a series of free variations on a simple initial rhythmic phrase. The piece can be performed with or without the video, the lighting should emphasize the theatrical, conceptual and sometimes absurd elements.
